This complex program entailed the update of all major building systems and compliance with public safety and access code requirements. The restoration aspects of the project required careful analysis of many unique architectural and artistic features to assure proper restoration and preservation. In many instances customized fabrication to match original materials and design specification were necessary. Restoration included extensive exterior and interior repairs, cleaning and modernization. The dome was freshly gilded twice and a new copper roof was installed. The decayed copper dormers and other architectural details were removed to serve as patterns for their replacements. The pierced iron cresting, so much a part of the capitol’s distinctive silhouette, was copied, recast and replaced. Stone carvers repaired the damaged ornaments and memorial statuary to restore the façade to its original glory.
