Regional YMCA Breaks Ground On $2.6M Project, Including Pool Bubble

The event on Tuesday, Oct. 18, kick-started a project that will expand the YMCA's programs and services, according to a statement.
The plan is to raze the current locker room building, seasonally enclose the outdoor Olympic-size pool in a bubble, and construct a building large enough to house new showers and locker rooms, additional fitness facilities, and larger program space.
The centerpiece of the $2.6 million project is the removable bubble, which will enable the YMCA to use its outdoor pool year-round. It is scheduled to be constructed in October 2017.
The project will be completed in two phases. Phase I, started this week, will begin with the demolition of the locker room building, with the new structure being completed for programs next spring.
During Phase II, additional exercise, classroom, office and program space will be added to continue to expand the Y’s many successful youth development and healthy living programs.
The installation of the bubble enclosure will make the outdoor pool available for year-round use, enabling the Y’s aquatic and water safety programs to double in capacity.
Upon completion, thousands more children will learn to swim through the Y’s water safety programs each year and hundreds more people will benefit from the therapy pool programs. It will also expand the Before and After School programs to better meet the needs of our community.

It operates three full service facilities in Danbury, Bethel, and Brookfield, and additional program sites by providing a variety of programs and services to the residents in the Greater Danbury area including:
- All day, before- and after-school childcare.
- Summer day camps at four locations.
- Wellness and aquatic programs for youth, teens and adults.
- Youth leadership programming as well as painting, drama, dance, sculpture, pottery, computer graphics, photography and more at the ESCAPE to the Arts center in Danbury.
